Compared to property, inheriting a bank account in Tenerife is usually fairly straightforward.
But there are still a few formal steps before the funds can be accessed.
And the first thing that surprises many families is what happens to the account immediately after the death.
Bank Accounts Are Frozen
Spanish banks automatically freeze an account as soon as they are notified of a death.
This is normal.
It simply prevents withdrawals until the inheritance paperwork is completed and the heirs are confirmed.
Direct debits and card payments often stop as well, which can catch people out if bills were being paid from that account.
How the Funds Are Released
To release the funds, the bank will normally request several documents.
These usually include:
- The inheritance deed (Escritura de Herencia)
- Passports and NIE numbers for the heirs
- The death certificate
- The Certificate of Last Wills
- Proof that the inheritance tax declaration has been filed
Once the bank receives everything, they can distribute the funds according to the inheritance deed.
Is There Tax on Bank Account Inheritance?
The balance of the account forms part of the estate, so technically it’s included in the inheritance tax calculation.
However, in the Canary Islands there is a 99.9% reduction for most close relatives.
Which means many families end up paying very little.
If the Heirs Live Abroad
If the heirs live outside Spain, the funds can normally be transferred to an international bank account once the inheritance process is completed.
Banks may ask for additional documentation confirming identity and tax residency, mainly to comply with anti-money-laundering regulations.
Nothing unusual… just standard banking procedure.
What Happens With Joint Bank Accounts?
If the account had two holders, the surviving account holder usually keeps access to their share of the funds.
The remaining portion becomes part of the estate and is distributed according to the inheritance.
Each bank handles this slightly differently, but the general principle is the same.
Compared with property, dealing with bank accounts is usually one of the simpler parts of an inheritance.
It’s mostly a matter of presenting the right paperwork so the bank can release the funds.
