Using a Power of Attorney for a Tenerife Inheritance: POA Explained

Most people who inherit property in Tenerife don’t actually live here.

They’re in the UK. Germany. Scandinavia. Somewhere a few hours away by plane.

Which means flying back and forth just to sign paperwork quickly becomes inconvenient… and expensive.

This is where a Power of Attorney makes things much easier.

What Is a Power of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows someone you trust, usually a lawyer or gestor, to act on your behalf.

You still remain the legal owner.

The document simply gives them permission to handle the paperwork and sign certain documents during the inheritance process.

In simple terms, they deal with the bureaucracy so you don’t have to.

Why Heirs Use a Power of Attorney

For most international heirs, it’s the most practical option.

It means:

  • No need to travel to Tenerife
  • Your lawyer deals directly with notaries and tax offices
  • The process usually moves faster
  • Multiple heirs in different countries don’t need to coordinate travel

Without a POA, arranging signatures between several people can easily slow everything down.

What Your Lawyer Can Do With a POA

Depending on how the document is written, a lawyer can usually:

  • Request official documents such as death certificates or wills
  • Apply for NIE numbers
  • Sign the inheritance deed at the notary
  • Pay inheritance taxes
  • Register the property in the heirs’ names
  • Deal with banks and frozen accounts

If the property will be sold, the POA can also include permission for the lawyer to sign the sale documents.

Where You Can Sign a Power of Attorney

You don’t need to travel to Tenerife to arrange it.

A POA can normally be signed at:

  • A Spanish notary in Tenerife
  • A notary in your home country (with an Apostille)
  • A Spanish embassy or consulate

That flexibility is exactly why most international heirs use one.

It removes the travel, speeds things up, and makes the whole inheritance process far easier to manage.
