How Long a Tenerife Inheritance Really Takes (Typical Timelines)

One of the first questions families ask me is:

“How long is this going to take?”

Fair question.

The honest answer is… it depends.

It depends on the paperwork, how many heirs are involved, whether there’s a Spanish will, and whether the person passed away in Spain or abroad.

But here’s what most families actually experience in the real world.

If the Death Occurred in Spain

This is usually the more straightforward route.

  • Death certificate: 1 to 3 days
  • Certificate of Last Wills: 2 to 3 weeks
  • Preparing the inheritance documents: around 1 week
  • Notary signing: typically 2 to 4 weeks later
  • Land Registry update: 2 to 8 weeks

Typical total time: 1 to 3 months

That’s assuming paperwork is in order and nobody is arguing over who gets what.

If the Death Occurred Abroad

This is where things slow down slightly.

Foreign probate has to be completed first, and that’s outside Spain’s control.

  • Foreign probate process: usually 4 to 12 weeks
  • Official translations and Apostilles: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Notary signing in Spain: once all documents arrive
  • Land Registry update: 2 to 8 weeks

Typical total time: 3 to 6 months

Sometimes quicker. Sometimes longer. Bureaucracy has its own pace.

What Speeds Things Up?

Power of Attorney.

If one person is authorised to act on behalf of the other heirs, everything becomes smoother.

  • No need for everyone to travel to Tenerife
  • Documents can be signed efficiently
  • Fewer delays coordinating multiple people

It won’t perform miracles… but it can shave weeks off the process and remove a lot of logistical stress.

The key thing with inheritance in Tenerife is this:

It’s rarely complicated.
It’s just procedural.

And procedures take time.

If you go into it with realistic expectations, it feels a lot less frustrating.
