When someone dies in Tenerife, their car, motorbike or other vehicle becomes part of the estate. Before you can drive it, sell it or transfer ownership, several legal steps must be completed. This guide explains exactly what you need to do and what documents are required.
1. Include the Vehicle in the Inheritance Deed
The notary must list the vehicle as part of the estate. You will need the registration certificate (Permiso de Circulación) and the ITV card.
2. File Inheritance Tax (Modelo 650)
Even though the Canary Islands apply a 99.9% tax reduction for most heirs, filing is still mandatory. You cannot transfer ownership until this is done.
3. Pay the Transfer Fee
The vehicle transfer tax (Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales) must be paid. This is normally a small amount based on the vehicle’s age and type.
4. Visit the Traffic Office (DGT)
You must take the inheritance documents to the Dirección General de Tráfico to register the new owner. An appointment is usually required. You will need:
- Inheritance deed
- Modelo 650 filing
- Vehicle documents (ITV + Permiso)
- ID and NIE of heir
- Proof of fee payment
5. Sell, Keep or Scrap the Vehicle
Once the paperwork is complete, you may:
- Sell the car (most common choice for heirs abroad)
- Keep and insure it in your name
- Scrap it officially if it is old or damaged
If You Live Abroad
You can complete everything by granting power of attorney to a lawyer or gestor. There is no need to come to Tenerife.
